KING PRAWN
The Fabulous New Sounds Of….
Released 10th May 2019
VINYL ALBUM
“In 1993 singer Al Rumjen and guitarist Devil Hands moved to London to form a band, they got robbed the very first night as they couldn’t be arsed to unload the removal van. That would set the tone for the freak show that followed”
Welcome back into the wild and wonderful world of King Prawn. The band’s epic fifth studio album ‘The Fabulous New Sounds Of’, and their first since reforming in 2013, takes the listener through a vibrant and eclectic journey through their musical heritage.
It’s heavy punk rock soul, peppered with horns and their trademark undertones of ska and dub. A feather quill in one hand and a sledgehammer in the other, it’s reflective and combative and flows like a true album should. Five years in the making, and boy, they do not disappoint!
From the thunderous stomping opener ‘Numeration Dub’, the explosive new single ‘Level Up’ and the brass-led heartfelt closer ‘Black Beads,’ this is an album that remains loyal to the band’s ska punk roots and displays the wealth of musical experience that Al Rumjen (vocals), Roger Hands (guitar) and Nikolai Jones (drums) have after years of gigging as one of the UK’s most incendiary live bands.
From the early ‘90s King Prawn’s infectious blend of ska, hip-hop & punk rock earned them a reputation as one of the most entertaining live acts coming out of London. The rock press loved their sense of unpredictability and their huge fanbase adored their ability to simultaneously implode and explode on stage. In 2003 the band decided to split. Their farewell show to a sold out Forum was testament to the growing popularity of the band.
It took a request from the infamous BOOMTOWN festival in 2013 to headline the DEVIL KICKS stage to re-unite the members and for them to discover a new audience whose enthusiasm for the band had grown and were embraced as true pioneers of mid 90’s ska-punk scene.
Now expanded to a 7-piece with brass section and keyboards, King Prawn remain one of the seminal ska-punk bands of the scene and still play live on a regular basis, with gigs across the country and headline sets at festivals like Slam Dunk and Boomtown Fair.
King Prawn are a force to be reckoned with, one whose appeal is timeless and cross-generational.
King Prawn signed this album to Cherry Red but gave the vinyl rights to Hastings label Property Of The Lost.
We are old school. We still remember buying an album and spending hours pouring over every inch of sleeve and lyric sheet.
Limited to 500 copies. “The fabulous New Sounds Of…..” will be pressed on the finest BLUE polyvinyl and lovingly placed in a cardboard gatefold sleeve. There are fewer, sweeter, things in life.
